The Drummond Tennis Club’s 2016 Championships last month will largely be remembered for the taming of the Master!
Hughie Masters – back after a short break – took on Calum Friar in the Singles Final. With the crowd expecting a Masters champion, Friar had other ideas. Calum produced his finest display on the clay to record a 6–3 6–2 win and his third title in four years.
Jenny Heron – our new Aussie lass – delivered a sound performance to take the Ladies title from Val McKenzie. Jenny played well and is a worthy champion.
Make mine a double
Jenny partnered a Drummond stalwart in Debbie Hood against a tough pairing of Fiona Shivas and Shelley Lockhart. Equally matched throughout and contested in every way, Shivas and Lockhart came through in a championship decider.
Masters was back against Friar but there was to be no second upset on the day. Young Harry McKenzie played some fine tennis along with Hughie, and in the end this pair deserved their win against Calum Friar and Miro Dragic. Miro was making his first final appearance and hopefully not his last, just showing that age is no barrier.
In the Mixed Doubles, the Master along with Shelley took the title against Dominic and for the third time on the day, Jenny Herron.
The Handicap Mixed Doubles Handicap was won by Moray Stiven and Caroline McCleery, defeating Susan McGuinnes and Jeremy Thornton.
Away from the tennis briefly, there was the unveiling of the new Andy Murray 2016 bench. This now sits proudly in the club grounds along with the 2012 bench. Designed by our very own Dave Faithfull, it’s Drummond Tennis Club’s way of saying well done.
Rachel Butters was named most improved player ahead of a host of others, so well done to her.
The day would not have been the same without the umpires. A big thank you to Caroline and Marcus.
Away from the centre court and over to the newly constructed Table Tennis Amphitheatre. Moray Stiven will be remembered in the history books for being the first champion here. Well done to him.
A special mention to the organisers – Val, Caroline and Nicola. Over 80 matches played and on time!
Also we wish Alistair a speedy return to action. The events and the members missed his participation and presence.
The Committee look forward to seeing a large turnout at the end of season social. Given last year’s event, I would personally encourage all of you to attend because it was FUN.—Mark Fergie
