One of the things most people in Broughton like best about living or working here is its diversity. How appropriate, then, that one of this area's main powerhouses will host a Celebration of Languages and Cultures this Saturday.
Scots, English, Welsh, Mandarin, Arabic, Italian, Polish, Punjabi, Spanish, Hindu, Urdu and French are just some of the languages regularly spoken at Drummond Community High School – a wonderfully creative and educating mix right at the heart of the neighbourhood.
A suitably ecclectic range of activities is planned, including – from 11am–12 noon – a talk by Edinburgh University's Professor Antonella Sorace on her research into the benefits of bilingualism and language learning.
In addition, there'll be piping, arts and crafts stalls, reading and singing from around the world, Big Band music, belly dancing, a freetrade café, mosaic making, Chinese dance, and information on specialist Russian, Polish and Turkish tuition. Throw in information from Edinburgh College, Leith Walk Primary School, a talk by Dr Helga Rein on the benefits of Vitamin D, and food and music from around the world, and you're still only scratching the surface of what will be on offer.
Bring your own tunes, proverbs, poetry, costumes, art, dances, food and textiles and help make the event even bigger!
