LEITH BACKS NEW GAELIC ROLE FOR BONNINGTON

Submitted by Editor on

Leith Central Community Council will back the former Bonnington Primary School as a stand-alone centre for primary-level, Gaelic-medium education (GME) in the capital.

Members voted to support the proposal at their meeting on 21 February.

Spurtle has covered the issue several times over recent months (see Breaking news 1.2.11), airing both appreciation of the project and widespread scepticism about the motives of some parents. The cost of GME given a straitened Education budget has also given us pause for thought.

Leith Central CC, however, were unequivocally enthusiastic. Members said the new role for Bonnington could:

  • reinvigorate local communities
  • encourage developers to build more family accommodation in the area
  • cut travel-to-school distances/times for local children
  • further cement Drummond CHS’s long-term future
  • offer cultural dividends for Out of the Blue and the Leith Gala.

City of Edinburgh Council invites consultation responses by 21 March 2011. Find out more here.
