LITERARY WORLD PARKS IN McDONALD RD LIBRARY

Submitted by Editor on

There's a busy month ahead at McDonald Road Library, with events planned which will appeal to a range of ages and interests.

Most eye-catching will be the discussion between journalist Stuart Kelly and the highly acclaimed author James Robertson (right).

Robertson, who writes poetry and fiction in Scots and English, has published four novels: The Fanatic (2000); Joseph Knight (2004); the Man Booker Prize-nominated The Testament of Gideon Mack; and And the Land Lay Still (2010). He is also the author of numerous children's stories, most brought out under his own educational imprint Itchy Coo.

The evening will run from 6.30–7.45pm on Thursday 16 June, and forms part of City Libraries' Edinburgh Reads series. The event is free, but those wishing to attend are advised to book tickets well in advance at: mcdonaldroad.library@edinburgh.gov.uk or Tel. 529 5636.

Beginning on Friday 10 June (3–4pm), children aged under 12 are invited to help create a 'giant park collage' as part of the Leith Festival.

First they'll design the background – trees, plants, benches, animals, whatever they wish – before populating it with 'people having fun' at the same time a week later. Activities will include paint, glue, stickers and wool, so Spurtle advises accompanying adults to wear chemical protection suits.

The finished collage will go on display at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall (Dalmeny Street). A Parklife celebration will take place the next day, Saturday 18 June in Dalmeny Street Park, 12–4pm.

As first reported earlier in the year (Breaking news 11.1.11), an informal Polish Book Group meets in the library once every 2 months, and is now looking for new members.

Books are provided in Polish and English, and so far have included Olga Tokarczuk's House of Day House of Night and Pawel Huelle's The Last Supper.

The next meeting is at 6pm on Monday 20 June. Just turn up, or for more information contact Cecylia O'May on Tel. 529 5636.
