A Met Office Yellow weather warning is in place for Edinburgh and the Lothians (and elsewhere) until 11.59pm tomorrow.
Police Scotland have therefore issued a Stage 2 ‘travel with caution’ warning, effective from midnight tonight.
‘We are expecting snowy conditions over the next couple of days, especially on the higher level routes,’ said Supt Louise Blakelock, Police Scotland’s Deputy Head of Road Policing. At 6pm this evening, sleet had turned to snow in Bellevue.
Snow and spray from melting snow are the most likely challenges overnight.
Police advice is not to become complacent, drive to the conditions, and if possible delay your journey.

Spurtle walked to the conditions on Calton Hill and the Royal Mile this afternoon. The weather was variously Baltic, miserable and disgusting. For brief periods, it abated to horizontal and horrible.
However, we quite enjoyed this piece of street-art, which seemed to respond to the mauvais temps with Gallic disdain.
It reminded us of a Picasso-inspired example spotted recently at the entrance to Victoria Park from Steadfast Gate.
Here, so confined is the space between fence and wall that we think the artist must have been suspended upside down by an assistant on Ferry Road.
