An 'assemblage of trash culture and rudimentary internet aesthetics covering subjects as diverse as bodybuilding, heavy metal, Star Trek and Satanism' will be on offer as the Negativnights event tomorrow evening at Edinburgh Printmakers on Union Street.
Curated by Ross Christie of Superclub (Gayfield Square), this 'all-encompassing mucus' is the work of Lachlan Rattray, who will screen an overview of his oeuvre in animation and video formats before participating in a question-and-answer session with the audience.
Mr Rattray (also known as Spew Barrymore, Holy Wow, Dreamguts, and Yoko, Oh No!) is a self-taught illustrator from Glasgow with an interest in trans-dimensional morphology in postmodern social constructs.
'Basically I hate being bored,' he told online magazine We Can Never Stop in June 2010. 'I think I am inspired by absurdity. I also like getting a reaction. My style is pretty infantile and over the top. I like my artowrk to have a sense of humour and if it doesn't make me laugh while I am making it then it's probably not going to turn out well.'
Influences include early thrash and metal bands such as Judas Priest and Merciful Fate, and the artist/illustrators Robert Crumb, Jim Woodring and Brecht Vandenbrouke.
[The evening begins at 7pm and tickets cost £5/£4 concession. Pre-booking is essential: info@edinburghprintmakers.co.uk, Tel. 557 2479.]
