It’s all go on Dunedin Street.
No sooner has Alien Bloc opened its doors to the bouldering brave (Issue 265, p.3) than in a separate development, Signature Pubs Ltd seeks to erect an extra flue through the wall of their ‘workshop building’ at Nos 8–10 to facilitate the operation of a new micro-brewery (Ref. 17/03586/FUL).
The building was put up in 1969, and the proposed new floorplan – across roughly 9,900 sq.ft – can be found here.
How will locals react? Historically, the area has long been light-industrial in character, and a brewery on this scale is entirely in keeping.
More recently, however, the ‘Beaverlands’ have seen considerably housing development on Logie Green Road, Warriston Road, Powderhall, and Broughton Road.
How will these new residents respond to the potential for the authentic, traditional aroma of a working brewery on their doorstep? Will a modern brewery even emit such a smell?
The planning application is short on detail about these matters. Spurtle is on the case to find out and will report back as soon as we have answers.
In the meantime, it may be of interest to learn that the rapidly expanding Signature Pubs chain is no stranger to this part of town. In 2014 they bought and rapidly revamped the Basement Bar on Broughton Street.
