NEW CHAPTER FOR OLD BOOKSHOP

Submitted by Editor on

The Dalry-based Bespoke Property Development Co. Ltd seeks planning permission to alter and partially change the use of premises at 136–138 Dundas Street. They aim to open a café (Ref. 12/04251/FUL).

Some readers will cherish fond memories of No. 136 in its last incarnation as the mysterious New Town Paperback, an establishment which few in Edinburgh would admit to ever having entered. Its dismal, sun-faded window displays were matched within by an eclectic stock of damp-looking, well-thumbed, second-hand paperbacks.

Further inside, beyond the unsmiling and usually silent guardian at the threshold, was a narrow chamber containing esoterica on what may loosely be described as crime, restraint and punishment. These publications were allegedly popular among senior members of the legal profession.

The shop – which closed in 2010 – is these days 'devoid of features of architectural interest or importance,' says the applicant.

No. 138 – Zen Kitchen – currently enjoys an unrestricted Class 3 licence (hot food carry out shop).

Externally, the frontage of No 136 would be improved by removing terazzo areas and faux mosaic tiling. The new, powder-coated aluminium shopfront and stallriser would match those next door. Both would be painted black.

Internally, appropriately enough, the proposals seek to form 'a sympathetic slapping' between the two premises, creating an opening within the dividing brick wall.

'The main thrust of the application is to create a viable commercial proposition and to provide the community with a contemporary establishment taking note of remaining original features.'
