[2] A music hall was added to the rear of the Assembly Rooms on George Street in 1843. It was was accessed from 53a Rose Street. A 6d seat in 1900 was worth about £1.95 today.
[3] Battle of San Juan Hill (1 July 1898) fought in Cuba between Spain and the USA; Bob Fitzsimmons (world heavyweight champion) lost to James J. Jeffries on 9 June 1899 in New York; Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, was British Prime Minister (1894–95); On 14 Oct. 1899, General Sir Redvers Buller travelled by ship to head the British Army at the start of the Boer War. His ship was the Dunottar Castle, later renamed the Roslin Castle; 1st Batallion, The Scots Guards sailed in the Nubia on 20 Oct 1899; Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic (1883–1900), ruling from Pretoria once the Second Boer War started on 2 Oct 1899; The Northumberland Fusiliers sailed for the Cape in October 1899.
