No sooner has listed building consent been granted for a restaurant at 1 Royal Terrace Gardens (Breaking news, 12.12.11) than those behind the scheme are seeking to extend its hours of business. When permission was orginally granted two years ago, the agreed opening hours were 9.00am–10.00pm. Now an application has been submitted for hours starting at 8.00am and ending at 12 midnight. Given the relative isolation of this site, Spurtle cannot see any good reason for objecting to the proposal, although some locals may think differently.

A substantial new alpine house resembling a substantial new birdcage is proposed at the Royal Botanic Garden (Ref. 11/03873/LBC). Intended for 'assembly and leisure' (idle vice, no doubt), the stone, glass and aluminium structure would – if approved – be situated a little uphill from the existing alpine house on land currently occupied by shrubs and bushes.

A smart, new DSLAM telecommunications broadband cabinet measuring 1408mm x 750mm x 407mm at the south-western corner of 6 Broughton Street and York Place (Ref. 11/03967/FUL). Green in colour, it would sit next to an existing cabinet hard up against the railings outside St George's and St Paul's Church. Openreach assure Planners that: 'The site has been chosen so that it presents the least visually obtrusive location as far as is practicable. Every effort has been made to locate the cabinet so as not to impact upon the surrounding environment'.
