Locals were shocked this morning to find a note on the door of Cuckoo’s Bakery saying the business had ceased trading.
The popular café appeared to be thriving in recent weeks, and regular customers had no idea there was trouble behind the scenes.
Spurtle spoke to another prominent independent café owner in the area this afternoon. They said that while the news caught them by surprise, it was not totally unexpected.
Even in the run-up to Christmas, they said, all small businesses in this sector face difficult times as the cost-of-living crisis means many people have less money to spend.
Spurtle will miss Cuckoo’s Bakery, established in 2017, not least for the politically themed muffins it occasionally used to predict major political results.
